Details

Description

The hike across the frozen Lake Sils gives you a feeling of open space that is more typical of coastal regions than high mountains.
Depending on the weather, the lake ice is officially made accessible around mid-January (please observe the warning signs on site).

For the return journey, there is a post bus or Engadin bus from Sils Maria approximately every 30 minutes. Those who still have energy can either walk back across the lake or take the hiking trail on the south-eastern shore of the lake, which leads via Isola to Maloja.

Hidden Gem

Halfway there, stop off at the Lagrev restaurant in Isola and warm your hands with a hot chocolate.

Safety Note

Please definitely observe closures!

Equipment

Occasionally a cold wind blows across the huge ice surface. Therefore, be sure not to forget a protective jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves! On sunny days, bring sun protection and sunscreen.

Directions

We start at Maloja Posta and walk past the cross-country skiing center and the Hotel Maloja Palace to the lake. The frozen lake conveys a feeling of vastness that is usually more familiar from coastal regions than from high mountain areas. We walk straight across the lake to Sils Maria. The path is usually officially open from mid-January. For the return trip, there is a post bus or the Engadin bus from Sils Maria about every 30 minutes. Those who still have energy can either return across the lake or take the hiking trail on the southeastern shore of the lake, which leads via Isola back to Maloja.
