Description
The first part of this hike through a wonderful larch forest up to the magnificent panoramic view from Muottas da Schlarigna requires strong legs. It begins at Pontresina station, still very flat, as a narrow road a short distance towards Val Roseg and then right over the tracks through a residential area. Now follow the signpost to the left directly into the forest and ascend higher and higher over root steps and stony paths, above the tree line up to the Muottas da Schlarigna viewpoint. Here, hikers like to face the friendly sun first and sit on the warm rocks to linger and take in the magnificent view over the Engadine valleys and mountains.
Now, since you are already up here at 2306 m above sea level, you should also visit the oldest larch. This more than 1400-year-old gnarled tree is found along the descent towards Alp Staz: just below the junction, it stands on the right side of the path. The wide alpine path from Alp Staz down to the idyllic Stazersee makes the further descent a comfortable walk.
However, if you want to hike on the heights a while longer before reaching the shores of Lej da Staz, do not branch off to the old larch but follow the high path past larches, alpine roses, and alpine alders, repeatedly catching a splendid view of St. Moritz lake, St. Moritz, and Corviglia. Finally, you reach the valley floor at St. Moritz and walk along raised bogs back to Stazersee.
This moor lake, very popular with excursionists and swimmers, warms up so pleasantly on sunny days that you can quite consider a jump into the refreshing water after the long hike! Around the lake on its shore meadows, you will find many spots for a restful siesta or a convivial barbecue picnic. Behind the Stazersee restaurant with a cozy sun terrace, the trail leads back through the forest to Pontresina.
