Description
Although the Romans already used the passes over Splügen and San Bernardino, the Rheinwald was only sparsely settled until the late Middle Ages. In the 13th century, Walser people settled here. Their language and culture still shape the valley today. Tanned Walser houses stand in Splügen directly next to Italian-style stone palaces. The old Graubünden mountain pass village is therefore classified by the heritage protection as a site of national importance; in 1995 Splügen received the Wakker Prize.
On the edge of the village, the Medelser trail starts at the cross-country skiing center. It leads through open, rising terrain to Medels. The small scattered settlement has fewer than 40 inhabitants. Originally used as alpine pasture land by Romans from the Schams, Medels was also settled by the Walser. Near Medels, the trail leads down to the valley floor. After a short loop at the foot of Guggernüll, it runs along the right bank of the Rhine through sparse forest back to Splügen.
The scenic cross-country skiing fun in the Hinterrhein almost did not happen: In the 1940s, the population of the Rheinwald successfully resisted a reservoir project with a 700-meter-long and 150-meter-high dam at the Splügen castle ruins. Had they lost the fight then, today Splügen and the lower part of the farming village Medels including the church would be underwater.
