Details
Description
The location at the Splügen Pass and the San Bernardino shapes the small mountain village: Large palazzi reminiscent of Italy stand in Splügen right next to the sun-tanned wooden houses of the Walser. For its historic village center, the old Grisons pass village was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society.
The main trail starts at the cross-country skiing center on the edge of the village. Shortly after the start, a bridge is crossed. Then it follows the shore of the Hinterrhein, alternating through sparse forest and wide, open areas. The view of the Rheinwald mountains – including Guggernüll, Einshorn, and Chilchalphorn – enriches the path to Nufenen and back.
The route is newly complemented by an additional loop for experienced cross-country skiers. This extra loop branches off in Splügen at Schneiti and leads as a more demanding circuit back to the main trail. This opens up a sportier variant within the Viamala trail network, which, due to its varied route, is especially suitable for trained guests.
