Description

The location at the Splügen Pass and at the San Bernardino shapes the small mountain village: large, Italian-style palaces stand in Splügen right next to the sun-tanned wooden houses of the Walser people. For its historic village center, the old Grisons mountain pass village was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society.

The valley trail starts at the cross-country skiing center on the edge of the village. Shortly after the start, a bridge is crossed. Then it goes following the bank of the Hinterrhein alternately through open forest and wide, open spaces. The view of the Rheinwald mountains – including Guggernüll, Einshorn and Chilchalphorn – enriches the path to Nufenen and back.

Cross-country skiing fun here was almost impossible: At the time of the Second World War there was the intention to let the village of Splügen sink under the waters of a mighty reservoir. Fortunately, the fighting population of the Rheinwald successfully resisted the construction project. Otherwise, Bündner mountain cheese would probably not have been developed in Nufenen in the 1950s. Since then, much has happened: the cheese is well known far and wide, and in the cellar of the dairy cooperative the robot Charlie has been diligently helping for several years in the care of over 12,000 cheese wheels.
