Description

The upper Segnesboden lies at about 2300 meters elevation, framed by impressive three-thousanders. This high alpine plateau, once shaped by glaciers, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Tektonikarena Sardona. It offers an impressive panorama as well as fascinating insights into Earth’s history: At the meeting point of the continents Europe and Africa, rock layers up to 300 million years old were thrust over much younger ones. The resulting thrust fault surface is clearer here than anywhere else.

The marked trail starts at the Cassons mountain station at 2500 m above sea level, which can be reached by the modern 10-person gondola FlemX from Flims. Slightly descending to the north, you enter on the snowshoe trail an arena of rock and snow formed by Piz Segnes, Piz Sardona, and Piz Dolf. Upon reaching the northern tip of the upper Segnesboden, the trail leads on the opposite side of the plateau towards the south. More and more peaks of the seemingly endless panorama of the Graubünden mountains come into view. Shortly before the path ascends again towards the cable car station, you see far below Flims and Lake Cauma, as well as the Segnes station with its eponymous hut. Back at Cassons, the cable car takes you back to the valley – optionally with a stop at one of the intermediate stations with fine restaurants.

Directions

First from Flims with the cable car to Cassons. From there follow the markings down to the upper Segnesboden plateau. Heading north until the end of the plateau and then on the opposite side of the plateau again southwards and slightly ascending back to the Cassons mountain station. The trail can be walked in both directions.
