Description

If you want to try snowshoeing once, this is the perfect place. The route shows no difficulties and can be easily done as a beginner's route in good weather and safe avalanche conditions. The views from the chapel at S. Carli are also overwhelming.

In the village of Cumbel, you first walk along the neighborhood street up to the start just before the picnic area Plaun Rueun. Now you climb the beautiful south slopes with snowshoes on your feet. Warm wooden facades of the barns invite you to rest again and again, before you arrive at the chapel Sogn Carli after about 1.5 hours. The panorama over the town of Ilanz, the Rhine Gorge, and the magnificent 3000m peaks of the Sardona range is unique in the Surselva.

The return route runs over a short section with loose woodland at Curschias and then over open alpine meadows back to Cumbel.

Hidden Gem

After longer sunny periods, the lower slopes are often without snow. You can then also hike to the snow without snowshoes. Or you take the summer hiking trail for a while and then switch to snowshoes.

Safety Note

This route is not marked.

Ski and snowshoe routes in unsecured terrain require good knowledge of avalanche risk assessment and route planning. Furthermore, a complete safety equipment must always be carried – regardless of the current avalanche risk.

We recommend the APP and website of WhiteRisk for preparation and planning of the route.

For carefree enjoyment, we recommend our mountain guides and snowshoe hiking guides of the Surselva.
