The snowshoe and ski tour from Splügen to Montespluga follows the historic Splügen Pass route and combines alpine terrain with impressive traffic history. After the ascent from Splügen and the ascent with the Bodmenstaffel chairlift to the Alpettli, the route runs along the eastern flank of the Alpettlistock at around 2,200 m above sea level. The tour leads over a small side valley and the historic avalanche gallery from the 19th century to the top of the pass and then above the pass road down to the high-altitude pass village of Montespluga. The route is not marked or groomed throughout and requires alpine experience as well as safe snow and avalanche conditions.

Description

The tour starts at the parking lot of the Splügen mountain railways. Along trail marker no. 50, the first section leads along the summer trail via Spluga up to the "Im Loch" car park. The route then climbs relatively steeply and runs parallel to the winter hiking trail to the Marble Bridge. From this point, the trail follows the winter hiking trail to the valley station of the Bodmenstaffel chairlift.

In just a few minutes, the chairlift takes participants up to the Alpettli (buy your ticket at the cable car ticket office in Splügen).

Once on the Alpettli, the route leads in a southerly direction along the eastern flank of the Alpettlistock. The trail runs as long as possible at an altitude of around 2,200 m above sea level. This is followed by a descent through a small side valley of around 250 metres in altitude, followed by a counter-ascent of about the same extent.

Then you reach the area above the Berghaus Splügen and the historic customs building. This is where the historic avalanche gallery on the Splügen Pass begins, which was built between 1843 and 1846 according to plans by the engineer Carlo Donegani and served to secure the pass road against avalanches. The route follows the avalanche gallery to the top of the Splügen Pass.

The path then leads in a largely direct line above the pass road down to Montespluga, where the high-altitude pass village offers itself as a stage destination.

Safety Note

The ski and snowshoe routes are to be understood as general directions. Depending on the conditions, ascent and descent routes have to be adapted. Walking routes in alpine terrain requires good physical condition, serious preparation and technical knowledge of mountain sports. The ascent of the described routes is at your own risk. For safe mountain sports, Viamala Tourism recommends training under expert guidance or a guided ski tour by trained mountain guides.
  • Plan your tour in advance
  • Check the avalanche situation and weather conditions the day before and shortly before the start
  • Check your safety equipment and material before you start
