Description

The tour starts at the Splügen cable car parking lot. Following trail marker no. 50, the first section ascends along the summer trail via Spluga up to the "Im Loch" parking lot. After that, the route climbs relatively steeply and runs parallel to the winter hiking trail up to the marble bridge. From this point, the path follows the winter hiking trail to the base station of the Bodmenstaffel chairlift.

In a few minutes, the chairlift carries participants up to Alpettli (ticket can be purchased at the cable car counter in Splügen).

Arriving at Alpettli, the route leads south along the eastern flank of the Alpettlistock. The path runs as long as possible at an altitude of about 2,200 m above sea level. Then follows a descent through a small side valley of about 250 meters height difference, followed by an ascent of roughly the same extent.

Afterwards, you reach the area above the Splügen mountain lodge and the historic customs building. Here begins the historic avalanche gallery at the Splügen Pass, built between 1843 and 1846 according to plans by engineer Carlo Donegani and served to protect the pass road from avalanches. The route continues along the avalanche gallery up to the pass height of the Splügen Pass.

Then the path leads mostly in a direct line above the pass road down to Montespluga, where the high-altitude pass village offers a good stage destination.

Safety Note

The ski and snowshoe routes are to be understood as general directional indications. Depending on the conditions, ascent and descent routes need to be adjusted. Walking routes in alpine terrain requires good fitness, serious preparation, and technical knowledge in mountaineering. Following the described routes is at your own risk. For safe mountaineering, Viamala Tourism recommends training under expert guidance or a guided ski tour led by certified mountain guides.
