Description

On the route from the Panixerpass hut to the Martinsmadhütte SAC, you almost always follow the border between the Glarus and Bündner regions. First, the path leads to the dreamy Rotstockseeli. Although you haven't been walking long, it is worth taking a short break and letting the surroundings affect you. The route continues to the Sether hut (2588 m). The hut is now privately owned.

The path leads a short slope up to Crena Martin (2727 m) and then along a ledge secured with chains on the north side over a step. You then follow the long ridge to the Bündner Vorab (3028 m), the highest point of the Via Glaralpina. Via the Vorabsattel, you go to the Glarner Vorab (3018 m) and finally at the edge of the Vorabfirn and later via Schwarzwändli to the Martinsmadhütte SAC (2002 m).

Hidden Gem

  • Below the Vorabfirn, you can find fossilized shells and coral heads in the limestone slabs

  • We are right in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona. The Sardona World Heritage region is unique worldwide: nowhere else can you see the results of the processes that led to mountain formation so clearly and monumentally as here.

Summits:

  • Glarner and Bündner Vorab

Safety Note

  • Panixerpass hut - Martinsmadhütte SAC T4

  • Short, challenging sections are secured with chains

  • On wet days, the smoothed limestone slabs from point 2605 and the descent from Schwarzwändli to Martinsmadhütte SAC can be very slippery.

Variation:

  • Panixerpass - Elm T3
