Alter Dorfkern von Castrisch

The first 240 meters of elevation gain from Valendas to Versam can still be described as a relaxed warm-up. After that, you have to pedal significantly harder. This great gravel route features two longer climbs. The varied mountain landscape and the fantastic views make every drop of sweat worth it.

Description

After starting in Ilanz, the low-traffic main road leads you through three historic village centers. Particularly notable is the village of Valendas with the largest wooden fountain in Europe. From Versam, you turn into the Safien valley and soon climb steeply over the scattered settlement of Arezen up to Imschlacht. The Maiensäss beizli is almost mandatory after these first 900 meters of elevation gain. Here you can enjoy a fine "platter" along with a fantastic view.

Put on your windbreaker and race over the mountain village of Brün to Valendas. Here comes the second longer climb of about 700 meters of elevation gain up to the small village of Dutjen. The Romansh pronounce it as "Dutscha." However, the local Walser call the village Dutjen. A sip in the Besenbeizli and then continue on delightful alpine roads and across the language border to Riein. Presumably, you will treat yourself to a strong sip at the village fountain here and take the last 570 meters of descent under your tires. We lead you over a few meters of easy single trails, over the old road, through Sevgein to Ilanz. Those who wish can also take the paved village road here.
