Via Mundaun – 3 days winter hiking between Obersaxen and Lumbrein

The three-day winter hike Via Mundaun leads through one of the quietest and most authentic regions of the Surselva. Between snow-covered forests, sunny alpine pastures, and historic villages, winter shows its silent side.

From Friggahüs near Obersaxen, the route goes via the mountain restaurant Wali to the Kartitscha mountain station and down to Meierhof, always accompanied by the view of Piz Mundaun. On the second day, the path leads through typical Walser villages, past the chapel Sogn Carli to sunny Vella. There, luggage transport can be requested at the Hotel Central in Obersaxen.

The final stage climbs over the Davos Munts bathing lake to the Curschellas viewpoint before descending to Lumbrein with its landmark, the medieval residential tower Chisti da Lumerins.

Via Mundaun is a tour for all who seek tranquility, vastness, and authenticity. A winter hike away from the hustle and bustle, close to nature.

Option for stage 1:

• From and to Kartitscha, you can alternatively take the chairlift to save some descent and ascent meters.

Option for stage 3:

• From Vella, you can take the train to Triel. From there, the path leads downhill to Davos Munts, where a particularly beautiful panoramic view opens up.

• Those who wish can also extend the tour from Lumbrein to Vrin. The winter trail over Val da Mulin, Sogn Adriu, and Val Miedra is not machine-groomed but must be walked with snowshoes. After a longer dry period, the track is often hard and easily passable without snowshoes. However, after fresh snow, this section may (still) not be traced.

Luggage Transport Via Mundaun

Day 1: Arrival and first stage

Arrival the day before: Overnight stay at Hotel Central, Obersaxen.

Arrival on the day of the tour: Bus ride to Meierhof Post, luggage can be deposited at Hotel Central. Then continue by bus to Obersaxen, Friggahüs.

Day 2: From Obersaxen to Vella

Luggage can be deposited at Hotel Central and will be transported to one of the booked hotels in Vella (Lumnezia).

If luggage transport is desired, it must be registered directly at Hotel Central.

⚠️ Important: A room reservation at Hotel Central does not automatically include luggage transport. This must be booked separately on request at Hotel Central.

Costs: CHF 45.00 surcharge for luggage transport

Luggage transport is not possible on the following dates:

Day 3:  Last stage

Luggage can be deposited at the hotel in Vella and will be picked up again after the tour.

Those departing the following day can leave their luggage at the hotel and enjoy their stay with an additional overnight stay.

1st day: Obersaxen Friggahüs-Wali-Kartitscha-Undermatt-Misanenga-Obersaxen Meierhof

2nd day: Obersaxen Meierhof-Affeier-Misanenga-Cuolm Sura-Bündner Rigi-Morissen-Vella

3rd day: Vella-Davos Munts-Val Tiarm-Curschallas-Lumbrein
