Auf der spektakulären hölzernen Hängebrücke
Around 1270, the Walser people migrated from the Valais, Pomatt and Gurin over the glacial landscape of Passo del S. Bernardino to Hinterrhein. The appearance of the village is reminiscent of the times of mule-trains and waggoners.

Description

The rock walls in the Viamala gorge rise up to 300 m from the Hinterrhein rushing deep below. In some places, the gorge is only a few meters wide. But not only the famous gorge itself, but also two spectacular suspension bridges cause amazement on the scenically impressive path along the Via Spluga, a historic mule track from Thusis to Chiavenna: the almost 60 m long Traversinersteg made of wood and steel and the approximately 40 m long Punt da Saransuns made of steel and granite.

Hidden Gem

A visit to the Rofflaschlucht is worthwhile at the stage destination! A rock gallery leads directly from the hotel into the gorge up to an impressive waterfall.

Safety Note

No technical difficulties. The path can be somewhat slippery in places when wet.

Equipment

Normal mountain hiking equipment.

Directions

From the train station in Thusis (883 m), go out of town via Marktwiesenstraße and Compognastraße to the roundabout. Continue straight ahead here until you reach the junction with Viamalaweg. Immediately after crossing the Rhine and the highway, the narrow path begins towards the Hohen Rätien castle complex. Those who wish can take the detour to the castle. Otherwise, follow the forest road south. After about 500 m, turn right onto the narrow path. This leads over the Traversinersteg towards the Viamala gorge. A short section along the road at the Viamala kiosk. Then follow the footpath branching left over the Punt da Saransuns and the Cultira Dafora hill to Reischen. From here, take the paved road to Zillis (945 m).

From Zillis, take the scheduled bus to Hotel Rofflaschlucht.
