Baldenstein

Baldenstein
Baldenstein Castle owes its name to its location on a spur high above the Albula. The name is derived from the Middle High German word bald (= bold, daring).

Description

The current state is based on the restoration after a fire in 1877.Probably only the four-storey tower dates back to the Middle Ages. The wall thickness of the building is up to 2.1 meters. The residential wing, which adjoins the tower to the west, dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. An Ebo von Baldenstein is mentioned by the builders in the documents between 1246 and 1252. A whole series of changes of ownership later, Francesco Conrad, born in Sils i.D., bought the castle in 1782. He was bailiff in Fürstenau, active in Chiavenna and province of Novara. His son, the naturalist and ornithologist Thomas Conrad von Baldenstein, spent most of his life at the castle. Today it is still owned by the Conrad von Baldenstein Family Foundation.
