World-Famous Bridge.
Landwasser Viaduct
The Construction of the Viaduct
The Landwasser Viaduct continues to amaze experts and casual visitors alike. The construction of the three main piers in 1901 and 1902 was an architectural masterpiece. Unlike most bridges from this period, wooden scaffolding was dispensed with – instead, the piers were lifted individually using a lifting device.
Crane-like iron bridges connected the piers and made it possible to lift the stones directly from the valley floor. These were quarried in the vicinity, hewn and transported to the construction site by rail. Conventional wooden scaffolding was used only for the round arches. Even today, visible iron girders at the top of the piers bear witness to this innovative construction method.
