San Romerio

San Romerio is an alp at 1,800 m above sea level and is located above Lago di Poschiavo in a beautiful location. From the hillside terrace, the view sweeps over the Poschiavo valley to Tirano.

Description

Situated on a suspended terrace 800 metres above the lake, the alp can be reached in just 20 minutes from the Viano-Piaz post bus station (from Brusio). In addition to beautiful views, the site also has a restaurant serving typical regional specialities. The San Romerio Hut is open from mid-May to the end of October and also offers overnight accommodation.

Between history and legend

The mountain church of San Romerio, which was consecrated in 1106, is enthroned on a steep rock face. In the 12th century, it was also the seat of the monks of the Humiliati order. Three houses of the former hospice are still preserved. Due to geological erosion, part of the ancient plateau of San Romerio collapsed into the valley, while the easternmost part, on which it stands today, was spared. According to tradition, the landslide stopped exactly where the old church stood, sparing the lives of the shepherds and flocks. In truth, it was later built right next to the abyss, in a location that is rarely beautiful, as if the ancient builders wanted to build the dwelling place of God as an obstacle to a future landslide.
