The Calmut quarry on the Oberalp Pass is the most famous place in the Surselva where soapstone is still mined.

Description

During the short snow-free period, about 50 m3 of rock are mined annually by specialists. Holes are drilled at intervals of about 10 cm and the giltstone blocks are carefully separated with the help of iron wedges. Blocks weighing up to 7 t are transported by truck to the workshop in Sedrun or Disentis.  The annual mining volume is used to produce 20-30 new Tavetscher kilns per year, which are also in great demand outside the valley and Switzerland. Since the end of the 1970s, the company Giger SA has had the sole concession for rock quarrying on Calmut. www.giger-sa.ch

In a studio in Segnas, Regina Giger also produces everyday objects and art objects made of soapstone.  www.rgc-art.ch
