Richard La Nicca (1794-1883), a young engineer from Safien, successfully applied to be an assistant to the contractor Giulio Pocobelli, who was in charge of the construction of the San Bernadino Street (1818-23). At the age of only 25, La Nicca was appointed the first chief engineer in Graubünden. In addition to Julierstrasse, other large buildings in the canton can be traced back to him.
