Argies
Description
Since their formation in 1984, Argies have distinguished themselves through their libertarian poetry, the power of their music, and the understanding and consistency of their political stance. Although her roots lie in British punk of the seventies, her music today shows influences from ska, reggae, dub as well as a large proportion of rock'n'roll elements and Latin American rhythms.
By practicing a "do-it-yourself" philosophy, they have built a successful career while maintaining their independence.
The name "Argies" is derived from the English pejorative term for "Argentineans", which was used especially by the British tabloid press during the Falklands War in 1982.
Far from being nationalistic, their name connects the band – whose members see themselves as internationalists – with oppressed minorities and marginalized people worldwide.
In the mid-nineties, Argies left their hometown of Rosario and moved to Buenos Aires. Since then, they have given more than 35 concerts a year and have become one of the most performing bands in the city. From 1999 onwards, the band regularly played extensive tours in America, Asia and Europe.
The band functions as a collective of dedicated musicians, all part of the project for an indefinite period of time, entering and leaving Argies with the same freedom that shapes the work within the band as well as the way its members learn and teach together across their differences.
Over the years, this particular way of making music has made Argies a truly independent cultural movement.
