WHAT DISTINGUISHES GOSPEL?

A typical feature of gospel singing is antiphony, the alternating song between the lead singer and the choir, also called "call and response". Another African-influenced element of gospel music is the peculiarity of African tonality. It is dominated by the pentatonic scale, i.e. the use of a scale, which, in contrast to the seven-tone system of European music, uses only five tones. It was only later that heptatonics emerged in African-American music, in which the third and the seventh, the so-called "Blue Notes", were added. It is also these intervals that continue to distinguish African and African-American music from the European major-minor modality. A last special feature that can be traced back to the African roots of the Nigro Spirital is the "timbre", the special timbre of the voice in African singing. In their singing, the singers develop a wealth of possibilities for differentiation of individual tones. The main aim here is to express one's personal mood. This creates sounds that sound rough and hotter on the one hand to the point of an impure scream, but on the other hand also have a pleasantly soft and delicate effect on the ears.
