Description

The Chrüzlipass was formerly the most important connection between Einsiedeln Monastery and Disentis Monastery and was used in the Middle Ages as a pilgrimage route continuing over the Lukmanier Pass. Before the "development" of the Schöllenenschlucht, it also served as a porter path.

Day 1: Since a large rockfall has made Val Strem impassable, we choose the route via Alp Caschlé, which unfortunately adds 2 hours of hiking time to the normal route. From Alp Caschlé we have to lose 300 meters of elevation again to the valley step in Bauns. In the glacier forefield with the floodplain and moor landscape of the "Glatscher da Strem" we find a nice spot by the water to rest before tackling the steep ascent to Chrüzlipass.

A whole series of cairns keep watch here and, as in former times, there is now again a cross at the pass summit.

Through the Chrüzlital, over scree slopes and through dwarf shrub vegetation, we reach the Müllersmatt with the meandering Etzlibach. The Etzlihütte is located on a slight rise. Here we allow ourselves to be culinarily pampered, or there is even the opportunity to take a bath in the Alpine herbal wooden tub.

Day 2: We start the ascent to Mittelplatten early the next morning, while the slope is still in the shade. The path runs partly on larger flat rock slabs, partly on somewhat slippery ground, but it is consistently well marked. Through Val Milà, steadily downhill, we reach the mountain pasture of Pardatsch. Above Zarcuns the circular hike closes and we hike back over Camischolas Sura to Sedrun train station.

Hidden Gem

Overnight stay at the Etzlihütte must be registered.

If we pack fresh fruits or vegetables for the hut warden, the joy and gratitude will be great.

Safety Note

In March 2016 there was a rockfall in Val Strem. This hiking suggestion is an alternative route because the valley remains closed until further notice. The direct access from Sedrun train station to the waterfalls in Bauns is no longer possible. Status August 2022

Equipment

Hiking equipment, swimwear for the tub

Directions

We start at Sedrun train station heading west until Camischolas Sura. Here we turn uphill, cross the railway line, and hike into the valley until we reach the fork to the right. Above Mises Grond we turn left again and a zigzag path leads us to Pegn dil Capi. We continue to follow the signs to Alp Caschlé. From here begins the steep descent in the lower part down to Bauns. After the waterfalls in Bauns, we must be careful to always stay to the left of the stream and not to miss the ascent to Chrüzlipass. Through the Chrüzlital we hike up to the Etzlihütte, with a small ascent from the Müllersmatt. On the second day, we descend briefly to Müllersmatt and follow the steep path to Mittelplatten. After the highest, rock-carved steps, we reach the power line mast. Now it is only downhill through Val Milà to Rueras. Before the railway line we turn left towards Sedrun.
