Description

The starting point for this charming hike is Mathon, a mountain village on the Schamserberg at 1,527 m above sea level.

A steep hiking trail leads directly from Mathon to the alpine pastures in Mursenas. Gradually, the summit of Piz Beverin emerges from the species-rich dry meadows and pastures. On flatter terrain, it continues leisurely from Mursenas to the idyllic Libi Lake. This lake, beautifully embedded in the mountain landscape, is the ideal spot for a lunch break with a fireplace. Along the alpine farm road, the path now only goes downhill to the village of Lohn, where the next attraction, the «Sound Forest», awaits. The last part of the circular hike runs from Lohn on the Sound Trail to the turning point, where you leave the themed trail “tùn resùn – Sound Forest Lohn” towards Mathon. Once back in Mathon, the view from the terrace of Restaurant Muntsulej is highly recommended. Ask for the nature park menu.

In Schamserberg, the smallest Romance idiom “Sutsilvan” is spoken. The Romance culture is also recognizable in the compact settlement of the “cluster village.” Residential houses, farm buildings, and the church form a compact unit.

Mathon is also known as "vischnaunca dils buons zenns" i.e., the village with the good bells. Depending on wind direction and weather, the pleasant sound of the 1528-cast church bell from Mathon spreads over the entire Val Schons.

Mathon is the home of the Romansh composer of songs Tumasch Dolf (1889 - 1963), who worked as a teacher in Donat, Zillis, Tamins, and Mathon. The Romansh song heritage lives on in the numerous choirs in the valley.
