Description

The starting point of the hike, although located at altitude, is easily accessible by train. From Bernina Hospice, take

a wide and flat path that runs alongside the railway line along Lago Bianco. The glaciers of Piz d’Arlas, Piz Cambrena, and Piz Caral rise majestically.

After passing Lago Bianco, the view extends southwards, along Valposchiavo and up to the Bergamo Alps.

At Poz del Drago, leave the trail towards Alp Grüm and take the path on the left which, like the stream alongside it, descends steeply through the larch forest.

Here it is worth making a small detour towards Lagh da l’Ombra (1995 m), a beautiful alpine lake hidden among the trees. Allow half an hour more than the indicated time for the hike.

From the lake, go back up, rejoining the previously left trail and continue the descent along Val da Pila, a narrow valley nestled in the tranquillity area for the wildlife of Campasc. Looking carefully towards the rocky slopes above, you may spot chamois moving among the rocks.

The comfortable trail gently descends alongside the Acqua da Pila stream. It passes under the impressive viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway, crosses the village of Cavaglia, and reaches the Rhaetian Railway station.

Before taking the train again, we recommend making a stop at the Glacier Garden to visit the extraordinary Giant's Kettles and the new path through the Cavaglia Gorge.

Hidden Gem

It is recommended to reach the Bernina Hospice by train and then take the train again at Cavaglia.

Alternative path if you prefer a less frequented route compared to the Alp Grüm - Stablini – Cavaglia trail, used by many hikers and bikers.

It is worth making a short detour to Lagh da l’Ombra.

In Cavaglia, it is possible to visit the Glacier Garden. Also not to be missed is a trip to the Cavaglia Gorge, descending into the gorge to admire the caves carved into the rock.
