Description
The descent from Chörbschhorn (2,650 m above sea level) to Stafelalp will be familiar to some from biking in summer. The descent over the long ridge with skis is just as fun as biking in summer!
Start from Strelapass (accessible by mountain railways up to here). From the top lift station head west into Steintälli. Pass the Strelasee, traverse eastward along the summer path to Latschüelfurgga. Continue following the summer path. Circumvent the NW slopes of the Wannengrat to the saddle (point 2,451). Then follow the northeast ridge to the summit of Chörbschhorn.
The descent goes over the south ridge past the Chörbschhorn hut. Then over the long ridge to Stafelalp and from there through the forest to Davos Frauenkirch.
Hidden Gem
On the descent, definitely stop at Stafelalp and visit the Berghaus Stafelalp.
Safety Note
Those who venture off-piste do so entirely at their own risk and are outside the liability coverage of the mountain railways. The yellow-marked freeride slopes are secured but not groomed or controlled. They may only be used when open. We recommend checking the open slopes, the SLF avalanche bulletin, and the weather forecast. All liability is excluded.
This freeride route is to be understood as a general directional guide. Depending on conditions, descent routes must be assessed and adapted independently. No guarantee can be given for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the information.
Freeride skiing in open terrain is at your own risk. Every freerider and touring guest is strongly advised to prepare thoroughly, plan the route, and obtain current information on snow and avalanche conditions. Avalanche report and snow info: www.slf.ch
Any liability for accidents arising from the use of the published information and route details is excluded.
In case of doubt, accompaniment by experienced mountain guides is highly recommended: www.bergfuehrer-davosklosters.ch
Equipment
We recommend the avalanche training center before the descent.
At Jakobshorn near the Fuxägufer mountain station in Davos, the correct use of avalanche transceivers (LVS) can be practiced under realistic conditions. The training area consists of a 100 x 100 m zone in moderately steep terrain and represents a realistic avalanche cone. The use of the training area is free of charge. You must bring your own LVS and avalanche probe.
