Description

We start the excursion with a ride on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway to Tschamut, the first village on the young Rhine. Here we begin our hike, first down to Tschamut, then further to the valley floor, past the golf course to Selva. It is worth making a small stop at the golf course restaurant.

The village of Selva has a special history. It was repeatedly threatened by avalanches in winter, and in 1949 all houses except one burned down completely. This event triggered an unprecedented nationwide aid campaign in Switzerland, and the village was completely rebuilt.

We cross to the other side of the Rhine. On a wide and comfortable hiking trail, through forest and over meadows, we reach the Fontauna playground, below Rueras. Great play equipment makes children's hearts beat faster. A large meadow also enables ball games; the brave might even take a bath in one of the small lakes or the stream. Meanwhile, we prepare everything needed for a grilled lunch at one of the fire pits.

Over a bridge, it is not far to the campsite restaurant, where you can enjoy fine ice cream for dessert. On low-traffic side roads and after a short climb up to the level of the road, we return to the starting point, Sedrun.

Directions

We take the train from Sedrun to Tschamut. On a paved, traffic-free road, we hike down to the little village, and about 200 meters east along the pass road. At the chapel, we see on the right side the hiking trail to Selva, which we follow. Below the golf restaurant, we cross the Rhine and on a hiking trail reach the playground after about 40 minutes. From the campsite, a paved path leads to Rueras. We reach the main road, but at the old schoolhouse we can immediately turn off again onto a side path to Sedrun.
