Casa Leon Vrin

The third stage is the pièce de résistance of the Hüttentour Surselva. But the key data are more intimidating than the stage actually is – especially since the route can be significantly shortened at the end.

Description

Initially, you roll down from Vrin to Surin and then follow the signposted mountain bike route via Surcasti to Uors. Here it is worth taking the post bus for the ascent to Vals. This only saves you "just" 320 meters in altitude, but still! Because on the third stage of the Hüttentour Surselva you need to save energy for the upcoming climb to the Tomül pass. For this, you follow the signposted mountain bike route (Alpine Bike), first on asphalt, then on gravel, and after the ridge on a well-ridable singletrail. In the last section after Alp Tomül, there are repeated pushing passages unless you have calves like Nino Schurter – or an e-bike. But the pushing is not in vain, because the upcoming section through the Safien valley is one of the longest mountain bike descents in the Alps, with almost 40 kilometers. The first part leads down along the historic mule route to Safien Thalkirch. Now you switch to the little-used road and later pass through the village of Safien Platz. At Rainmatte you leave the road, follow the Rabiusa stream, pass the reservoir, and then climb a few meters on the right side of the valley to finally reach the old Safien road. Today only a singletrail remains of the road, a fantastic section through extremely steep terrain for mountain bikers. The route is repeatedly crossed by small tunnels at this point. Later the path becomes wider again and on a small road you roll down the valley to Sigl Ault.

At Sigl Ault, on the final stage of the Hüttentour Surselva, the wheat is separated from the chaff: Those who have no strength left roll down to Bonaduz and take the train back to Chur here. But the original route still has a few highlights to offer. The section after Sigl Ault is a trail delicacy like no other and leads high above the Rhine Gorge to Versamerstrasse. Here is the next opportunity to end the stage with the flat ride to Bonaduz. But even here it applies: on the original route there is still something to experience, because the now upcoming singletrail section past the ruins of Wackenau is no less attractive than the previous trail above the Rhine Gorge. This way you reach Reichenau and get on the train back to Chur. That is the recommended version for the third stage of the Hüttentour Surselva.

Hidden Gem

Those who still haven't had enough in Reichenau follow the cycle path from Tamins towards Chur and then switch before Felsberg to the trail near the left bank of the Rhine. This trail leads to the Rossboden military area, from where you roll along the cycling routes to Chur station.
