Mutterkuh frei - Obertschappina -Glaspass - Safien

The starting point is the picturesque mountain village of Obertschappina at 1577 m above sea level. We leave the village and follow the well-developed path, which initially runs steeply along the sun terrace of the Heinzenberg. The view wanders again and again over to the mighty Piz Beverin, whose striking silhouette accompanies the entire hike. Where the path narrows and the air becomes clearer, we reach the Glass Pass at 1846 m above sea level after a steady ascent. Here, the Beverin mountain inn invites you to take your first rest - with a cup of coffee you can enjoy the view over the surrounding peaks.

From the pass we continue towards Inner Glas. The path leads along the ridge and offers magnificent views down into the Safien Valley. Where the path approaches the alpine area of Inner Glas, sparse larch forests frame the path and give the landscape an almost meditative silence.

The descent into the Safien Valley is on an old mule track, which for centuries was the most important connection to the north for the inhabitants of the valley. The path winds its way down the mountain flank in serpentines, past lush alpine meadows and through shady forests. Again and again, the view opens up and reveals a view of the populated slopes of Tschappina and the Heinzenberg opposite. When the last rays of sunshine of the day settle on the peaks, the descent becomes an unforgettable experience.

A special advantage of this hike: the route is considered "suckler cow free", which means that you do not have to cross pastures with herds of suckler cows - a reassuring thought for hikers with children or for those who prefer to avoid encountering cattle.

We reach the destination Safien-Platz at 1316 m above sea level after a varied descent. The original Safien Valley with its typical Walser houses welcomes us with rural charm. A walk through the village and a stop at one of the inns round off the hike. If you still have time, you should visit the impressive Safier Bergkirche - a gem of the region.

Refreshment stops are available at the Beverin mountain inn on the Glasspass as well as in the inns in Obertschappina and Safien-Platz.

The hike can be shortened and started from the car park in front of the Beverin inn.
