Description

Splügen is considered one of the oldest pass villages in Graubünden; for a long time, the Splügen Pass was the most important connection between Graubünden and Italy. Local muleteers used the path for over 500 years to transport goods such as silk, cotton, soap, carpets, or fruits from north to south and vice versa. This transit traffic is evidenced by the sun-browned Walser houses, which stand directly next to large, Italian-looking stone houses.

From the Rhine Bridge, the trail initially follows the historic Splügen Pass road to the first right turn. Here begins the marked snowshoe trail “Panell.” Opposite, at the foot of the Teuri and Schollenhorn, the village of Splügen can be seen again. The trail then leads downhill through the forest. From time to time, one catches a glimpse of Sufers and the Sufner limestone mountains.

At the forest clearing “Panell”, it is worth looking back: the view of Guggernüll, the Einshorn, and the Chilchalphorn is impressive. The trail continues through the forest down to the Sufers reservoir, which balances the strongly fluctuating inflows from the Rheinwald caused by precipitation and snowmelt. At the reservoir, you have the choice: to return on the same snowshoe trail (see map) – or to hike back to Splügen on the winter hiking trail via the Roman road.
