Description
Hidden Gem
Feed the squirrels with unshelled nuts – this way the rodents have to use their teeth and wear them down, which is important for the animals.
Equipment
Good footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
The hiking trail is only passable with the JST or with a normal wheelchair.
The JST Mountain Drive – an ideal companion for independent outings. Arosa Bergbahnen AG (based at the mid-station of the Arosa-Weisshorn cable car) has two models that can be rented as needed. The wheelchairs are picked up and returned at the mid-station.
Directions
From the Arosa, Prätschli bus stop, the start follows the hiking trail for the first 500m with a slope of around 6% on asphalt. There are several rain grooves and benches along the path. At the highest point, the ground changes to gravel followed by a descent of just under 20% over 300m and a short stretch with just over 20% descent. This section of the path is occasionally separated by two pasture gates that are easy to open. From km 0.8, the path levels and follows the golf course with a nice panorama, descending just under 10%. At the Maran dairy, the surface changes back to asphalt.
The steep descent can be bypassed by turning right onto gravel at the start of the trail and following the Prätschliweg with about 3% descent and 3 rain grooves. After about 400m, you rejoin the original path.
At km 1.3, directly on the hiking trail, is the Hotel Hof Maran, which has a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Access to the house is on the left of the building via stairlift to the basement. The key for the stairlift can be requested at reception tel. 081 378 51 51. Inside the building there is an elevator: door width 80cm, depth x width 130x100cm. The toilet is on the ground floor. Toilet info: door width 91cm, clear floor space (depth x width) 180x140cm, seat height 50cm, grab bars: right movable, left fixed, approach: right, mirror height: 104cm, sink unobstructed height: 73cm.
After Hotel Hof Maran, turn onto the Eichhörnliweg. After 100m, the ground changes to gravel and after another 100m to firm forest soil. The first 700m of the path descend about 8% with numerous rain grooves, passing two fire pits towards Arosa. Many benches line the path. The remaining 900m are quite flat.
Return to the station via an asphalt footpath and a short section of gravel with several rain grooves and about 12% descent. Over a short asphalt ramp with more than 20% descent, you reach the pavement, which you follow to the station.
