Description

Lai da Tuma/Tomasee: At the Rhine source begins the 1,230-kilometer-long journey of the Rhine. Much of what happens here influences its course. Therefore, the residents of the municipality of Tujetsch - on whose ground the Rhine source lies - take care of their natural wonder. The mighty Vorderrhein Glacier covered the entire Surselva during the last Ice Age. The glacier-shaped mountain landscape of the Oberalp Pass is the source area of the Vorderrhein. The ice stream has long since melted, leaving behind a firn basin in which the Lai da Tuma is nestled at the foot of Piz Badus. A jewel among the Swiss mountain lakes at 2,345 m a.s.l. - unique in its beauty, magic, and significance.

From Trun: From Trun, you hike on the left side of the Rhine to Tavanasa. Here you cross the Vorderrhein over the old Rhine bridge. From Tavanasa, you walk on the Polish path, which was built between 1940 and 1945 by interned Polish soldiers. Commemorative plaques and a wayside shrine at the western end of Plaun Grond recall the history through the fascinating river landscape.

From Ilanz: From Ilanz, the route leads along the Vorderrhein through a nationally significant floodplain into the heart of the gorge to Versam Station. The Rhine Gorge is characterized by sandstone walls up to 300 meters high. The "Swiss Grand Canyon" offers unforgettable fauna and flora. Since there is no continuous hiking trail between Versam Station and Trin Station, this section must be covered by the Rhaetian Railway. From Trin Station, the route continues on foot. Along the riverbank, the path leads to Reichenau, where the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein merge.

Hidden Gem

A detour to the Alix lookout platform in Valendas, as well as a visit to the Islabord lookout platform in Versam, is worthwhile.

Safety Note

Attention: The section between Versam Station and Trin Station is not passable on foot due to the terrain and must therefore be covered by the Rhaetian Railway.

In uncertain weather conditions, the route should not be started. Weather changes in the mountains are frequent. If a rain front or similar arises during the hike, you should turn back in time.

Equipment

Good hiking shoes with good tread, weather-appropriate clothing (rain jacket/sun protection), change of clothes, first-aid kit, drink, food, possibly hiking poles.
