Description

The starting point is the post bus stop in Innerferrera at 1480 m above sea level. We cross the road and climb across the mountain flank to about 1600 m, where we briefly walk along the rock face on a wooden footbridge. The path leads through small rock falls to the Punt da la Muttala at 1823 m above sea level.  – an old stone bridge that already points the way to a bygone era.

We now follow the old ore path, which reminds us of the rich mining history of the Ferrera Valley – the valley was not called the "Iron Valley" for nothing. Past the former tunnel, digging sites and a small iron warehouse (the "Gruoba"), we hike through the Val Nursera in the direction of the Alp Nurseras. This ascent is quite challenging with 530 meters of altitude over 1.5 kilometers, but rewards with a magnificent view of the surrounding peaks. Once you arrive at Alp Nursera, goats and cattle graze in the summer months.

The path to Alp Nursera climbs again briefly and leads to around 2000 m above sea level in the direction of the Suretta Valley. We hike over rough terrain and enjoy the fantastic view back to Piz Grisch and over to the Teurihorn. After a short descent to the Schwarzwaldalp and another ascent of around 200 metres in altitude, the Suretta Valley is crossed. If you are lucky, you will discover the rare, protected silver thistle along the way.

Now the descent to Ausserferrera begins. In a truly enchanting location above the valley stands an ancient Romanesque church in Cresta (1660 m above sea level) – the oldest church in the valley. On a footpath, then on a road, we descend to Ausserferrera.

The route is considered "suckler cow free" – you don't have to cross pastures with herds of suckler cows, which makes hiking with children or for those who prefer to avoid encountering cattle particularly enjoyable. ATTENTION: At Punt Muttala, a pasture with young cattle is crossed, Alp Nurseras is grazed by goats and sheep, but no livestock guard dogs on site.

From Ausserferrera we hike along the rushing Ragn da Ferrera (the "Ferrera Rhine") back to Innerferrera and thus close the circular route.
