Description
The central element is the Glarus thrust fault: a straight, magical line along which, during the formation of the Alps over millions of years, old rocks deep underground have been pushed onto younger ones. Wind and weather have exposed these unique structures and made them visible on the earth's surface. The landscape in the Sardona World Heritage area is exceptionally rich in natural treasures. The high density of moorlands, alluvial plains, game reserves, and geotopes of national significance create a valuable habitat where ibex and bearded vultures feel at home. In numerous mountain villages, traces of Walser settlements can still be found today.
The 5 highlights along the Sardona World Heritage Trail:
- Segnes plains
- Tschingelhörner with Martinsloch
- Glarus thrust fault
- Geogallery Flumserberg
- Trutg dil Flem
The 84-km-long Sardona World Heritage Trail (SwitzerlandMobility Route No. 73) leads you to Kerenzerberg along the Mürtschenstock, the Murg lakes, the Mühlebach valley, the Flumserberg, the karst area near the Schils spring, the fossil sites between Schönbühl, Fanser, and Laui-Fürggli, the original Weisstannen and Calfeisental, the Heubützli and Foopass, as well as the area around the Tschingelhörner between Elm and Flims.
This unique long-distance hiking route consists of 6 stages – ideal for a week-long hike from accommodation to accommodation. You can also customize the hike for two- or three-day routes and include additional GeoSites. Eurotrek offers the hike with luggage transport starting from the second stage.
The first part of the stage runs on the GeoPhenomena Trail with information boards about geological features. Highlights include the Hellloch doline, the section at the foot of the imposing Mürtschenstock, as well as the crystal-clear mountain lakes.
Stage 2: Murgsee - Spitzmeilenhütte
This second stage leads from the glacier-shaped Murgsee landscape over the grassy sunny slopes in the Glarus Mühlebach valley to the Spitzmeilen SAC hut with a wonderful panorama of the imposing Churfirsten and the Alvier group.
Stage 3: Spitzmeilenhütte - Weisstannen
This demanding stage takes you through the colorful mountain landscape of the Fans high plateau down to Weisstannen. From various viewpoints, you have wonderful views of the diverse landscape. Especially impressive is the view over Chammseeli to the surrounding mountain peaks.
Stage 4: Weisstannen - Sardona hut
From the former Walser settlement Weisstannen, the fourth stage leads through the wild Lavtina valley to the impressive waterfall arena at Batöni. After the strenuous ascent to Heidelpass, you see the Glarus thrust fault below Ringelspitz and Piz Sardona.
This stage takes you through untouched mountain landscapes to Foopass, accompanied by the Glarus thrust fault at Foostock and Piz Sardona. With the wonderful Glarus panorama in front of you, you descend to Elm.
After the Wakker Prize village Elm, you see from this stage over Pass dil Segnas to the Tschingelhörner with Martinsloch. When descending to Flims, after the alluvial and moorland Segnes plain, the landscape is increasingly shaped by the Flims rockslide, the largest rockslide in the Alps.
