Description

The hike begins in the village of Andeer and initially leads through the grounds of the Conrad granite works, where the distinctive Rofna porphyry is processed – better known as the characteristic Andeer granite. Soon you enter quiet forest passages, accompanied by fascinating glacial grooves and the mysterious cup stones of Arsiert – enigmatic signs of a long past time that invite you to marvel and pause.

A first view opens over the Schams valley before descending to the roaring Rofflaschlucht. The impressive waterfall was developed for tourism by the Andeer returnee Christian Pitschen – inspired by the Niagara Falls. Those interested can visit the small museum inside the rock.

After a short section along the A13, you pass the historic Schmelza, where ores were once smelted. Soon after, the bouldering paradise Magic Wood beckons: moss-covered boulders in a fairytale-like forest, animated by international climbers.

It becomes quieter at the forest clearing Pro sur Ragn. Over two footbridges and a narrow bridge, you reach the idyllic Ausserferrera (1300 m). Here, the Edelweiss inn surprises with fine local and Greek cuisine.

The last section leads through sparse mountain pine forest, past a power station and spectacular glacial mills, before reaching the highest point at about 1500 m. From there, a gentle descent leads to Innerferrera, where the stage ends in alpine tranquility.

Hidden Gem

Rofflaschlucht & Museum: A detour into the spectacular gorge and to the gallery behind the waterfall is worthwhile. The small museum tells the fascinating story of Christian Pitschen.

Mining Museum Innerferrera: A fascinating insight into the hard world of historic ore mining awaits visitors in this lovingly designed museum. Original tools, impressive exhibits, and exciting stories convey the lives of the miners of old.

Safety Note

Freedom from dizziness required (bridges).

Equipment

Appropriate weatherproof equipment is strongly recommended.

Directions

Start in Andeer (982 m), initially along the Hinterrhein, through the grounds of the Conrad granite works. Continue on a service road, then on a forest path uphill to about 1200 m. At the fork, do not go to Alp Lambegn, but down to the gorge at Arsiert and over the Ragn da Ferrera.

Then the route leads from the Rofflaschlucht inn through a quarry, over the Parsagna bridge, above the inn, across the cantonal road and the gallery roof of the A13. Past the Schmelza (1238 m) by old industrial facilities and on to the suspension bridge.

Through the Magic Wood area, in two loops to the forest clearing Pro sur Ragn. Optional detour to Ausserferrera, otherwise continue on the circular path over two footbridges in the Val Nursèra and a bridge over the Ragn da Ferrera. From there uphill to the village of Ausserferrera (1300 m).

Along the left valley side, past the power plant, the route rises again, crosses the Val da Tgaglia, reaches the highest point at about 1500 m and finally ends in Innerferrera (1481 m).
