Description

The village of Sumvitg lies near the Vorderrhein – the Rein Anteriur. The Romansh language is still strongly rooted here.

To warm up, you walk a bit along the main road until the silence begins from Rabius. Hiking trail sections alternate with forest and alpine roads. Above Trun, you reach the settlement of Caltgadira, where the famous Maria Light pilgrimage church has shone as a beautiful baroque building since 1683.

Now altitude meters have to be gained. Over long stretches on hiking trails, you finally reach the village of Schlans. A traditional Graubünden mountain village could hardly be more authentic. A short walk through the alleys is definitely worth it. To Dardin, you walk over three kilometers on an asphalted side road and can enjoy the mountain world relaxed. The final ascent to Brigels, again on well-developed hiking trails, completes the hiking day.

Hidden Gem

Visit the Maria Light Pilgrimage Church (Nossadunna) in Caltgadira.

The mountain village of Schlans on the steep sunny slope is worth a longer break.

The family mountain village of Brigels is not only good for staying overnight but also worthwhile for a village tour.

Overnight stays at the stage start are also possible in Rabius.

Safety Note

The route should not be started in uncertain weather conditions. Weather changes in the mountains are frequent. If a rain front or similar develops during the hike, you should turn back in time.

Good hiking boots with good tread or trekking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing (rain jacket/sun protection), drink, possibly provisions, possibly hiking poles.

Take the train to Sumvitg-Cumpadials and hike up to the village of Sumvitg in a few minutes.

In Brigels, take the post bus from Breil-vitg, post office to Tavanasa-Breil/Brigels and continue by train.

Church Disentis Sedrun

Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, Sumvitg

The oldest records about the parish church of Sumvitg date back to the ninth and tenth centuries. At that time, the church was dedicated to Saint Columban. Emperor Charlemagne (+814) donated the church to the successor of Bishop Tello, who in turn bequeathed the church to the Disentis Abbey. A new building and three altars were consecrated on June 13, 1633.
