Description

The "Percorso dei Contrabbandieri - Capel, Maloja", stretches over an approx. 1 ½ hour hike from Maloja to the south. Through an enchanted larch forest you reach the Lägh da Bitabergh, where the smugglers' path ends and the mountain lake idyll invites you to rest and linger. Along the way, 17 posts provide exciting insights into the life and work of the smugglers. On the search for the hidden smuggler's goods, you learn to locate yourself in nature, to orientate yourself by the direction of the compass and/or the position of the sun, combined with lots of movement, play and fun in the mountains. The posts are filled with interesting facts about being a smuggler and provide anecdotes from the life of smugglers. They also provide "survival" clues, such as first aid recipes from the nature.

For one and a half centuries, from the beginning of the 19th century until well into the 20th century, smuggling was an important source of income for the population, especially in Bergell and the Engadin. A wide range of goods was smuggled, especially food and luxury goods, which allowed good business to be done and made life in the once very barren mountain valleys more pleasant.
