Splügenpass im Winter
The two-day snowshoe and ski tour from Splügen to Montespluga and back leads over the historic Splügen Pass and combines high alpine terrain with impressive cultural landscape. After the ascent from Splügen and the ascent with the Bodmenstaffel chairlift to the Alpettli, the route runs along the eastern flank of the Alpettlistock, over the historic avalanche gallery to the top of the pass and further down to the high-altitude pass village of Montespluga. There you can spend the night in one of the accommodations in the pass village before starting your way back the following day. The way back follows the same pass crossing and leads over steep and then flatter passages back to Splügen. The tour is not marked and is not groomed and requires alpine experience as well as stable snow and avalanche conditions.

Description

The entire tour from Splügen to Montespluga and back combines high alpine winter terrain with impressive scenery and historic pass infrastructure. The route is suitable for experienced snowshoe hikers and ski tourers with good fitness and alpine experience.

The starting point is Splügen. From the cable car park, the ascent first follows the summer trail via Spluga (trail marker no. 50) to the "Im Loch" car park. The route then climbs steeper and runs parallel to the winter hiking trail to the Marble Bridge. From there, the trail follows the winter hiking trail to the valley station of the Bodmenstaffel chairlift. The chairlift takes you up to the Alpettli, which allows you to overcome the first few metres of altitude efficiently.

From the Alpettli, the main alpine part of the tour begins. The route leads in a southerly direction along the eastern flank of the Alpettlistock and runs for as long as possible at an altitude of around 2,200 m above sea level. After a descent through a small side valley of about 250 meters in altitude, a corresponding counter-ascent follows. Then you reach the area above the Berghaus Splügen and the historic customs building.

This is where the historic avalanche gallery on the Splügen Pass begins, which was built between 1843 and 1846 according to plans by the engineer Carlo Donegani and served to secure the pass road against avalanches. The route follows the avalanche gallery to the top of the pass. The path then leads in a largely direct line above the pass road down to the high-altitude pass village of Montespluga, which is ideal as a stage destination with overnight accommodation.

The way back usually begins the following day with the renewed ascent to the top of the pass. The same path is used as on the outward march to the north end of the avalanche gallery. After the passage at the old customs and the Berghaus, the route runs north of the hairpin bends of the pass road downhill. The first descent is relatively steep and leads up to around 1,900 m above sea level.

From here, the terrain flattens out, and the route follows a long line to the valley station of the Bodmenstaffel chairlift. For the last section to Splügen, the winter hiking trail is followed again, analogous to the ascent, back to the starting point.

Safety Note

The ski and snowshoe routes are to be understood as general directions. Depending on the conditions, ascent and descent routes have to be adapted. Walking routes in alpine terrain requires good physical condition, serious preparation and technical knowledge of mountain sports. The ascent of the described routes is at your own risk. For safe mountain sports, Viamala Tourism recommends training under expert guidance or a guided ski tour by trained mountain guides.
