Description

At the lighthouse, the path leads slightly downhill along the pass road. After about 600 meters we cross the road, after which the path becomes wider. You are now on the former railway track of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which used to run openly around the flank of the Piz Calmot. Today, however, the railway mostly disappears in a tunnel, and a little later in a semi-open gallery. If it suddenly buzzes and rumbles, don't be alarmed. A train is on its way. Where the train leaves the tunnel again, you cross a viaduct over a rushing mountain stream. In a zig-zag you hike on a meadow path to Tschamut, the first village on the young Rhine.

We switch to the other side of the Rhine. On a wide and comfortable hiking trail, through forest and across meadows, you reach the playground "Fontauna" below Rueras. You cross the Vorderrhein, pass the Rueras campsite, and go up to the village. Here you cross the main road and walk towards Sedrun train station.

Safety Note

Care is needed when crossing the pass road.

The route should not be started in uncertain weather conditions. Weather changes in the mountains are common. If a rain front or similar arises during the hike, you should turn back in time.

Equipment

Good hiking boots with good grip, weather-appropriate clothing (rain jacket/sunscreen), change of clothes, first aid kit, drink, provisions, possibly hiking poles.
