Description

The starting point of this route is Zernez in the Lower Engadine, which is reachable from Davos in about 45 minutes. From here, the route leads up through the Val dal Spöl to the Ofenpass at 2149 m above sea level. This is followed by a descent through the Münstertal, past small mountain villages to Santa Maria (1375 m above sea level), from where the challenging climb to the Umbrail Pass begins. The road leads over tight hairpin bends to the highest road pass in Switzerland at 2501 m above sea level. After crossing the border into Italy, there is another ascent to the Stelvio Pass, Italy’s highest mountain pass at 2757 m. The Giro d’Italia has climbed here several times, which is why a monument for the five-time Giro winner Fausto Coppi was erected at the pass summit. Following the ascent is a spectacular descent via Trafoi to Glurns, from where the route climbs again to the Ofenpass before the descent to Zernez rewards the efforts.
