Description

A visit to the castle complex Hohe Rätien should definitely be planned. The castle towers high above the entrance to the Viamala Gorge. Since time immemorial in the middle of the flow of traffic over the Alpine passes Splügen and San Bernardino, pilgrims, traders and muleteers passed by here. The Romans also occupied the strategically important plateau. The incomparable view over the Domleschg and the Heinzenberg and first insights into the Viamala are worth the detour. Only recently, an early Christian baptistery was discovered on High Raetia with an amazingly beautifully preserved baptismal font (5th century), the oldest north of the Alps to date. In recent years, it has been secured, restored and made visible to visitors with great effort. High Raetia is part of the UNESCO RhB-Albula Railway World Heritage Site.

From High Raetia the Veia Traversina continues to the Traversinersteg. The spectacular, almost 60-metre-long wooden suspension bridge – which also forms a staircase – is one of the highlights on the way to the visitor centre in the Viamala Gorge. The Traversinersteg overcomes a height difference of 22 m and lies about 70 m above the stream bed of the Traversinertobel.

This hike offers exciting insights into the former and current path and road construction through the legendary Viamala gorge: From the former mule path to the first commercial road to today's national road, which elegantly bypasses some of the dreaded passages inside the mountain.

In the heart of the Viamala Gorge, a staircase from 1903 leads directly from the visitor center down into the deep gorge. The play of colours of the water, the whirlpool pots and the rock formations leave a strong impression of natural beauty. The terrace of the visitor center invites you to linger and dream. The hike can then continue to Zillis or Andeer or return to Thusis via the "Lost Hole" hiking option. It is also possible to end the hike here and start the way home or the onward journey by PostBus.
