Description
The French duke Duc de Rohan called Heinzenberg the "most beautiful mountain in the world" in the 17th century. In fact, Heinzenberg above Thusis is much more than a mountain: gentle slopes, charming hedges, secluded mountain huts, and a wonderful view of the Burgenland Domleschg await winter hikers here.
The Tschappinerrunde starts in Obergmeind. With the local mountain Piz Beverin at your back, the winter hike leads down to Obertschappina, a hamlet of Tschappina. The scattered settlement at the foot of Piz Beverin is the starting point of the mule track over Glaspass into the remote Safien Valley. Before the development of transport at the end of the 19th century, this historic route was the most important connection to the north for the people of Safien. With gentle ups and downs, via Oberurmein the natural ice field on Patrutgsee is reached. It lies directly at the forest edge, with wonderful views into the Albula Valley. In winter, an old popular sport is practiced on the lake: ice stock sport. So a stop is definitely worthwhile before heading back to Obergmeind.
