Description

Bathing in a frozen lake high in the mountains on hot summer days: nowadays, people enjoy this refreshing pleasure gladly during a hike. In the past in contrast, enjoying a bath was rare - and certainly not in a mountain lake. Anyone who did so was considered insane. This is what happened to the poschiavini who occasionally bathed in one of the mountain lakes in the Val dal Saient. For this reason, the lake was named "Lagh dal Mat" (madman's lake).

The lake can be reached from Alpe Pescia Bassa, after passing Lagh dal la Regina and some small unnamed lakes. The circular trail continues, leading to Col d'Anzana. From here it is worth taking a few steps over the border, to get a glimpse of Valtellina from the rocks at the edge of the pasture. The trails in this area, are much more comfortable to walk on than the section along the mountain lakes. This is because these trails were used as smuggling routes until the 1980s.

Hidden Gem

If shepherds are present, tasty cheeses can be purchased at Alpe Pescia Passa.

Directions

The precourse is marked as a mountain hiking trail (white-red-white, difficulty level T2). Starting and ending point of this circular hike, is the Pescia Bassa Alp. The Postbus route, operated on a dial-a-ride basis, ends at Cavaione. But if the timetable allows, the driver (for an additional charge), can transport walkers one more piece up the mountain.
