Description

Bathing in a frozen lake in the high mountains on hot summer days: nowadays, during a hike you will gladly enjoy this refreshing pleasure. In the past, on the contrary, enjoying a swim was rare – and certainly not in a mountain lake. Whoever did it, was considered crazy. This is what happened to the Poschiavini who occasionally bathed in one of the mountain lakes of the Val dal Saient. For this reason, the lake was called "Lagh dal Mat" (lake of fools).

The lake can be reached from Alpe Pescia Bassa, after passing the Lagh from the Queen and some small unnamed lakes. The circular path continues leading to the Col d'Anzana. From here it is worth taking a few steps beyond the border, to take a look at the Valtellina from the rocks at the edge of the pasture. The trails in this area are much more comfortable to walk than the stretch along the mountain lakes. This is due to the fact that these trails were used as smuggling routes until the eighties.

Hidden Gem

If shepherds are present, at Alpe Pescia Passa you can buy tasty cheeses.

Directions

The pre-course is marked as a mountain hiking trail (white-red-white, degree of difficulty T2). The starting and ending point of this circular excursion is the Pescia Bassa alp. The PostBus line, operated according to the call system, ends in Cavaione. But if the timetable allows, the driver (with an additional cost), can transport the walkers for a while more up the mountain.
