Description

Beautiful, varied hike through forests and over green meadow terraces. In the past, the old Zerfreila route was the only connection between Zerfreila and Vals on the right side of the valley. Shady forest paths alternate with steeper, rocky sections and green meadow areas. However, the path mostly runs through the forest. There is always something interesting along the way: the "warme Kracha," a deep rock crevice, the Calvari Chapel in the forest, and also repeatedly the view into the deep Rotabärg Gorge.

Hidden Gem

In the quiet mountain forest, there are repeatedly impressive views into the wild Rotabärg Gorge.

The Old Zerfreila route has recently been equipped with signs indicating the historical field names. A flyer is available at the start and end of the hike or at the Visit Vals tourist office.

Safety Note

Sure-footedness required. Caution on partly wet rock slabs.

On this hike, you must expect mother cows.

Directions

From the parking lot of the sports lifts, follow the steep path above the road to the left next to Zerfreilastrasse. Below Gross Cheer, the old Zerfreila route crosses the road for the first time. Continue following the path. After the second crossing of Zerfreilastrasse, cross a small stream. Crossing another stream, reach Grüana Wasa. The path continues over Seetobel (the stream flowing from Selvasee), ascending stepwise over large rocks and stones. Pass right past the Bildbalma. Now the path becomes less steep and leads through forest clearings with wet rock slabs up to the height of Rotabärg. The rocks on the right drop almost vertically into the gorge. Now cross another stream. On the left comes Kippe. Now through partly open forest to Geissfelli. Continue past Warma Kracha (a deep rock crevice) to the Calvari Chapel. Continue to the forest meadow Ussera Bleika and then to Inner Bleika. Through sparse trees, follow the path to the Restaurant Zervreila.
