Davos Frauenkirch
In the 13th century, there was a wave of emigration in the Valais. The settlers established themselves in the highest alpine regions, which had not previously been inhabited year-round. The local rulers called them "Walser" and granted them special freedoms: for example, they received the land they cleared as a perpetual lease or the right to self-administration and marriage. With these special rights, they were considered "free" and independent compared to other population groups.
