Cavaglia, a former workers' village that developed around the local power plant, is now a holiday resort. The village has become famous for the extraordinary Glacier Garden with huge glacial potholes carved into the rock.
Description
Cavaglia rises on a glacier-shaped plateau at 1703 m a.s.l., between two rock steps in the upper part of the Poschiavo Valley. Ancient woods line the pastures and the plain cut in two by the rocky bed of the Cavagliasco stream. In addition to a handful of houses, the original village includes a power plant and a railway station. From here, trains run hourly over the Bernina Pass to St. Moritz or in the direction of Tirano in Valtellina. In addition to the railway line, there is a second, spectacularly fascinating variant to get to Cavaglia: the Ecological Current Trail, which leads from the station of the Bernina Hospice down to Cavaglia via the Palü Gorge and provides interesting information on the ecological production of energy from water and on the Bernina Line, the construction of which is closely linked to the electrification of the valley.
A couple of minutes' walk from Cavaglia is the unique glacier garden "Marmitte dei Giganti", with its huge glacial potholes.
In summer, Cavaglia is an ideal starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours in the Poschiavo Valley and the Engadine.
