Description
The old mountain village of Soglio has many faces. At its heart are the manor houses of the von Salis family. The oldest dates back to the 14th century and is now home to the B&B Pension Piazza. The "younger" ones still date back to the 17th/18th century, including the Casa Battista (1701), which has been an inn since 1876 and still pampers its guests today under the name Palazzo Salis. Narrow alleyways lie between the houses and stables, which huddle together like a bird's nest.
Soglio lies on the sunny terrace of the Bergell. The warmth allows for amazing flora, which is well protected from fresh breezes by old stone walls. The chestnut trees begin below the village - cultivated plants that were brought to Bergell by the Romans. However, these airy heights are almost a little too harsh for them. Soglio lies on a climatic threshold (and perhaps also on the "threshold to paradise", as the painter Giovanni Segantini is said to have once said).
