Biennale Bregaglia – Transito

From 7 June to 27 September 2026, the fourth edition of the BIENNALE BREGAGLIA invites visitors to explore the valley under the exhibition theme "Transito": From Maloja (incl. Torre Belvedere) via Alp Cavloc, Casaccia, Borgonovo, Stampa, Promontogno (incl. Nossa Dona) to the national border at Castasegna, historical connecting routes can be rediscovered.

"Transito" has several meanings: it can mean both a physical movement from one place to another, and a process of fundamental changes between one or more states. It includes, among other things, objects, goods, planets, territories, and people in terms of time and space.

Travel is an active condition, linked to necessity, expansion or spiritual search, which manifests itself in different forms and historical phases: in political expansion – from the Roman Empire to the establishment of modern borders; for commercial reasons, including smuggling; in search of experience – in Grand Tours (round trips), mountaineering or in today's diverse tourism. It also includes an exchange of skills and resources, for example in transhumance (cattle ascent and departure of cattle) or in modern commuting.

Conversely, its role as a transit region is a passive condition that requires the ability to welcome and connect cultural, landscape and linguistic identities that would otherwise remain separate – such as those of the Mediterranean and Switzerland. This ambivalence makes it possible to share communities, services, work, goods and heritage, constantly redefining oneself in terms of concepts – more or less tangible – such as territory, belonging and "elsewhere".

The artists were invited to reflect on these themes and to deepen their personal research in relation to the symbolic places of "transit" in Bregaglia and beyond.
