Cinema: "Amrum" in Ilanz

Amrum 1945. Shortly before the end of the war, Hille (Laura Tonke), a mother of three, still firmly believes in the final victory. Life on Amrum is also anything but easy at that time. Her twelve-year-old son Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck) ploughs every day with his best friend Hermann (Kian Köppke) in the fields of farmer's wife Tessa (Diane Kruger), while above their heads the Allied bombers fly towards the German mainland to finally bring the enemy to its knees. If you want to survive, if you want to provide for your family, you have to get down to work – and that's exactly what Nanning does: he collects driftwood at night in the bright moonlight, hunts rabbits in the dunes and steals the eggs of the wild geese. But in the village he remains an outsider. As a "newcomer" from the big city, he is met with suspicion, and he is ridiculed at school. In addition, his heavily pregnant mother clings to the Führer in loyalty to the Nibelungen, even when everyone has long known that there is nothing more to be won. When the war really comes to an end and the news of Hitler's death reaches the island via the radio, Hille goes into labor. Shortly after the birth of her fourth child, she sinks into deep sadness and refuses to eat. When she expresses the great desire for a white bread with butter and honey, Nanning draws new hope. For him, it is clear that his mother can only regain her strength if he fulfills her wish. But where to get it if you can't even steal it all over the island? Bartering, day marches through the mudflats, seal hunting – nothing is too much for him. As he collects ingredient after ingredient, Nanning is confronted not only with the harsh reality of war, but also with a family secret that will change his life forever.
