Manchester by the Sea (2016) is an American drama by Kenneth Lonergan.
The story follows Lee Chandler (played by Casey Affleck), a reclusive janitor in Boston who returns to his hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea after the sudden death of his brother. There he not only has to look after his 16-year-old nephew, but also confront his traumatic past and the loss of his own family.
The film is an intense, quiet drama about guilt, grief, responsibility and the difficulty of living with old wounds. Casey Affleck won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the film also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
