Concerto: Aaron Quinn
Description
UNCOOL - ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
Aaron Quinn’s solo guitar work operates at the intersection of noise music, hardcore, and Afrological improvisatory practice, engaging improvisation as an epistemology — a way of organizing sound through embodiment, risk, and relational time. His music moves between extremes of density and fragility, pushing the instrument to its limits in both volume and restraint.
Using graphic structures to shape form, he composes through parameters rather than fixed outcomes. Texture, harmonic weight, and melodic contour function as guiding forces, allowing each performance to emerge as a negotiation between structure and immediacy. Improvisation is not ornamental but structural — an active compositional force.
Harmonically, the music balances abrasion and lyricism. Saturated, distorted sonorities coexist with clear, singing lines. Much of the writing centers on two-voice counterpoint — a “line against line” approach — where independence between voices creates both tension and resonance. This contrapuntal thinking extends beyond pitch: textures collide and separate, densities press against openness, and timbral weight functions as a voice of its own. Vertical harmonies arise from the friction and convergence of these layers, producing chords that feel simultaneously forceful and luminous.
The result is music that is physically direct yet architecturally deliberate — intensity shaped into form.
